Last Friday after a furious amount of end-of-work e-mails, I managed to negotiate a deal with a guy on craigslist to buy this lovely bicycle. It’s a 15″ Specialized Hardrock Mountain Bike – CroMo (steel) frame, nice components, 21 speeds. I got a pretty sweet deal on it, too.
I also happily found my U-Lock yesterday; now all I need are some sweet panniers or at least a rack of some kind on the back and of course a helmet. (Having an OT best friend means I have to wear a helmet, so as to reduce the likelihood that I end up one of her infuriating brain-damaged patients.)
Anyhow, I have decided to name the bike Colin, because I love Colin Meloy, and because of this song.
I thought about naming the bike Madeline, but decided that would just be asking for it. In DC the likelihood that your bike will be stolen is super high. I figured if I named my trusty steed Colin maybe he’d feel obligated to not get stolen away – given Madeline’s terrible fate. Let’s hope.
On another note, I realized that if I ride my bike and rack it on the bus to get to work, I could save upwards of $5 a day, or $25 a week. It would add a little bit of time to my commute, but nothing huge, and it would mean the bike would pay for itself in 2 months.
That would be pretty sweet.
